Residents could not rely on the gate or the block doors

Singleton Hall is a gated development of apartments in three entrance blocks, off Lodge Lane in Singleton, a few minutes from Poulton-le-Fylde. Visitors arrive at a main gate before they reach the blocks, so the intercom has to work at both.

After years of faults, with the existing system obsolete, the managing agent came to us for an upgrade. Residents were reporting problems at the gate, and in one case at both the gate and their own block door. Every resident needed to be able to answer callers and open the gate and their block door, reliably.

A wired system spread across a gate and three blocks

The old system linked the gate and the entrance panels to intercom handsets inside the apartments. On a site like this, a fault can sit anywhere along the route: at the gate, at a block panel, in the cabling between them, or in a handset behind a resident's front door. Finding it means getting into apartments and tracing cables across the site, and the next fault starts the same hunt again.

The system was also obsolete, so repairing it piece by piece was no longer worth it. The upgrade had to remove the weak point altogether: panels that do not depend on any cabling to the apartments.

4G GSM panels that call residents' own phones

We replaced the gate and block panels with Videx 4G GSM intercoms. Each panel has its own SIM card and calls the resident's mobile or landline directly. A visitor scrolls to the resident's name on the display, or enters their number, and the resident's phone rings wherever they are. One key press on their phone opens the gate or the door.

Residents let themselves in with a proximity fob or a keypad code. Each fob opens the main gate and the resident's own block only.

The hardware

  • Main gate and the two larger blocks: Videx digital 4G GSM panels with name-scroll buttons, an LCD display, a keypad and a proximity reader, in vandal-resistant surface housings with rain shields
  • Single-apartment block: a Videx one-button 4G GSM audio panel with its own proximity reader
  • An external 4G antenna on every panel, so each one keeps a strong signal
  • A dedicated 12V power supply for each panel
  • 40 proximity fobs, two per apartment in the larger blocks, programmed into the gate and the right block
  • Every resident's number programmed, then every call route and door release tested on site

The gate rings the resident's phone, wherever they are

Residents at Singleton Hall now answer the gate and their block door on their own phone, at home or away, and open it with one key press. There are no handsets or intercom cables in the apartments to go wrong. When a resident moves in or changes number, the panels are updated without anyone needing to get into a flat, and we still look after the system for the managing agent.

4G GSM intercoms for apartments

The entrance panel has its own SIM card and calls the resident's mobile or landline over the 4G network. The resident answers it like any other call and presses a key on their phone to open the gate or door. There are no handsets and no intercom cables inside the apartments.
No. The panel makes an ordinary phone call, so it works with any mobile or landline, and nobody has to install or log in to anything.
Yes. Each panel needs an active SIM with a calling plan, on a network with a good 4G signal at the panel. At Singleton Hall we fitted an external antenna to every panel so each one holds a strong signal.
Each panel has a proximity reader and a keypad. Residents in the two larger blocks have two fobs per apartment, and each fob opens the main gate and that resident's own block only. An entry code works too. A lost fob can be removed from the panel without affecting anyone else.
The panel's call list is updated: the old number comes out and the new one goes in, at the gate and at the resident's own block. The managing agent lets us know and we make the change.
