A door that rings the phones the team already uses

Warwicks Amusements runs an amusement arcade on Church Street in Blackpool town centre. They needed a door entry system that rings the office phones, lets staff release the door from any of those phones, and lets key staff let themselves in with a card instead of a key.

The office phones had already moved to BT Cloud Voice, BT's hosted phone system, with a Door Entry ring group set up across four Yealink desk phones. The new door station had to work with that system, not replace it.

BT Cloud Voice will not accept a third-party door phone

A standard BT Cloud Voice account only works with handsets from BT's own approved list. There is no option to add another make of SIP device, and BT does not release the SIP login details a door phone needs to register. So the obvious approach, adding the door station to the BT account as one more extension, was not possible.

This is common when a business moves to a hosted phone system: the door entry still has to reach the phones, but it has to get there another way.

A door station on its own SIP line, calling the BT ring group

We gave the door station its own low-cost SIP line, separate from the BT account. When a visitor presses the call button, the door station dials the office's existing Door Entry number on BT Cloud Voice, so all four desk phones ring at once and anyone can answer.

Staff talk to the visitor and press a single key on their handset to release the door. Calls end automatically after 60 seconds, and the SIP line tops itself up automatically, so it cannot run out of credit and quietly stop calling the office.

The hardware

  • Fanvil i32V outdoor SIP door station, with an illuminated call button and a card reader built in
  • Electric strike lock wired through the door station's own relay, so a phone call or a card both open the door
  • One Cat6 cable to the door, carrying the data and the 12V DC power on separate pairs
  • Three staff cards registered, and each one tested on the door
  • Admin password changed from the factory default and stored securely

Visitors press one button and the whole office hears it

Warwicks Amusements now has a door that rings the phones the team already uses, opens from any of those phones with one key press, and lets staff in with a card. No changes to the BT phone system were needed. Everything was tested end to end on site: calls from the door, door release from the handsets, and every staff card.

Door entry with a hosted phone system

Yes. A standard BT Cloud Voice account will not let you add a third-party door phone, but the door station can have its own SIP line and call your BT ring group number. Every phone in the group rings, and staff answer it like any other call.
While on the call, they press a set key on the handset keypad. The door station recognises the tone and fires its lock relay, so the door releases straight away.
Yes. The Fanvil i32V has a card reader built in. Each card is added to the door station's own access list, and a lost card can be removed without affecting the others.
Not here. It runs from a 12V DC supply, and rather than run a second cable we sent the power down the spare pairs of the same Cat6 cable that carries the data, so only one cable goes to the door.
